Vivarium

Was geschieht, ist bereits Bild. Was gesehen wird, ist bereits Wiederholung.

«Versuche nicht, den Gartenzwerg zu bewegen. Das ist unmöglich. Erkenne die Wahrheit: Es gibt keinen Garten. Es gibt keinen Zwerg. Alles ist bereits aufgezeichnet.»

About the Work

Vivarium understands the cave as a space of the present. Its point of departure is Plato’s Allegory of the Cave and the question of the relationship between perception, image, and reality. The shadow images of the present are no longer confined to the cave wall. We encounter them in designed spaces, everyday habits, and mediated repetitions.

In a contemporary reworking of Plato’s Allegory of the Cave, the cave has become furnished, maintained, and habitable. In the artificial front garden, familiar notions of nature, privacy, comfort, and security meet the Nagelfluh rock inside the mountain. The title Vivarium connects this space with questions of boundaries, care, and control.

The soundscape also moves between the familiar and the artificial. Synthetically generated sounds draw on natural noises without concealing their artificial origin.

In the video, space, action, recording, and playback become interwoven in a recursive structure (mise en abyme). What happens returns to the space as an image. The present, recording, and repetition merge into one another.

What happens is already an image. What is seen is already a repetition.

«Do not try to move the garden gnome. That is impossible. Realize the truth: There is no garden. There is no gnome. Everything has already been recorded.»
